Wetlands 101: An Introduction to Boreal Wetlands - online

Base price $95.00

Course Content

This training is an introductory online course on boreal wetlands. The online content will cover:

  • introduction to wetland definitions and the importance of boreal wetlands
  • basic wetland identification skills with a focus on the five major wetland classes according to the Canadian Wetland Classification System (CWCS)
  • information on wetland ecology, hydrology, and ecosystem goods and services
  • tools to identify wetlands in the field
  • challenges that wetlands may pose to your work (e.g., safety, construction) as well as wetland avoidance and minimization strategies

This training will include practical examples of how to apply the information presented, including an example of how to consider wetlands during the planning, design, and construction stages of industry activities to minimize potential impacts to wetlands. Understanding how to plan and operate in and around wetlands can increase worker safety, decrease long-term infrastructure maintenance, and help companies meet voluntary and regulatory requirements.  The content covered in this course will help you gain a better understanding of boreal wetlands and help you understand how this knowledge can be applied to the work you do.

Learning Objectives, by the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Define what a wetland is and describe why boreal wetlands are important
  • Describe the five major Canadian wetland classes found in the boreal and the characteristics, functions, and values of these classes
  • Identify and classify wetlands, at an introductory level, using soil indicators and key plant species
  • Describe wetland classification systems that are commonly used in Canada and where these systems are most applicable
  • Infer wetland hydrology based on knowledge of wetland classes
  • Explain potential challenges associated with working in wetland areas and apply this knowledge to their work to be able to avoid or minimize potential impacts
  • Continue building on content covered in this course by knowing where to find resources for wetland classification, wetland plant identification, best practices for avoiding and minimizing impacts to wetlands

Great introduction course. User friendly and a great resource for anybody working in and around boreal wetlands. The BMPs could also be extended to wetlands in the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Forest as well. Thank you!

A field trip component would be wonderful, also having a pdf version of the slide presentation versus only video and audio would be helpful.

Great course, definitely needs a field trip to better understand the concepts. As an engineer, learning species name is difficult with no field trip. Thank you

I found the course informative but could certainly used a glossary of terms/dictionary to better assist me with my understanding initially. Although I have travelled across Canada fighting Wildland Forest fires and have fallen in, crossed and utilized probably every classification of wetland we have, I now know which ones they were and which ones that will serve me better as water sources or too avoid. Very interesting course and I look forward to learning more about these precious ecosystems and how to do my part to look after them. Thanks; Corey Conrad

This was a good introduction to the different types of wetlands and the Classification systems in Canada. I was surprised by how much of our Canadian Boreal Forests are wetlands! Motivated me to learn more.

Course content was well presented and comprehensive. I agree that quite a few quiz questions were unclear and sometimes confusing. Happy with links to resources at the end. I liked the diagram with the nutrient, moisture and flow regimes, that was super helpful to visualize how the wetlands relate to one another and quickly compare.

Course is very good, pleased with the material content but feel the questions used to test knowledge are somewhat poor. Some questions are vague, others lack clear context to answer properly. Too many what ifs may lead to incorrect answer.

This course was okay, but could use some major improvements. First, content... it seems to be specifically targeted to industries and building roads in wetland areas, which I did not get from the course description. Though I appreciate the applicability, we could use some other types of examples. Content overall was pretty good for a 101 course, but it seemed general to wetland types and not just to boreal wetlands. Delivery could use the most improvement. Some things I noted were that there were many links to additional content in the videos that you cannot click on and were not given as links below the video. The presenter had a very monotone voice and did not seem enthused about the content. Some images were very blurry and could not be read. The quality of the presentation could use some modernization. As for the quizzes, I didn't understand the purpose of the open-ended, fill-in-the-box questions when no one is reviewing them, and it seemed as if several questions were not directly inked to the content, creating an unfair guessing game. Many questions also seemed specific to industry. While in the end I did learn some things about wetlands that I didn't know before, I would not recommend taking this course unless it was free, particularly because there is no interaction with an instructor, so what would I be paying for? Though this critique may seem harsh, I believe that with some work this could be a great course and I appreciate that DUCs has developed it as I strongly believe it is needed.

This course certainly helped me in identifying and classifying wetlands, particularly wetlands that can be difficult to discern in transitional areas, such as a gradient among rich fen, shrub swamp, and meadow marsh. Excellent course and I like the level of detail in the DUC EWC categories.

Lecture was clear, concise, and a nice refresher. Thank you for providing the Wetlands 101: Introduction for free. My only recommendation would be to implement a close-caption option during the presentation. Not everything the speaker mentioned was on the screen, and someone with a hearing impairment may not receive the same experience, and education, as myself. Other than that, this was a lovely, Thank you.

I discovered this course through a Scottish Rewilding facebook page. I thought it was a great course, informative and many of the concepts and values can be adapted to my work here - for example, Scotland contains large areas of precious peatlands which are commonly subject to development. I am an ecologist and regularly work on peatlands, so the information I learned in this course will prove handy. Many thanks for offering this free course!

"I enjoyed taking the course. It was very informative. I learnt a lot. Starting off it was a little overwhelming as I was not sure what was what. But as the course went on I learnt to tell the difference in the wetlands and what to look. Wish that there was a booklet to go with the course as it would make it easier to follow and we would have the book to use for future references. Also I would have liked to see the questions and answers at the end of the final as was shown after each chapter quiz.. Thank you for offering the course on line. " Bernice White

I'm not very familiar with the boreal plains so I would have liked more info to assist with identifying the plant and tree species e.g. black spruce was mentioned often but I have no idea how to tell a black spruce from other conifers. I would love a version of this course that covers prairie and mountain wetlands.
